Angie and Pat have been together for over four decades, but after Pat’s unexpected death, Angie finds herself at the mercy of Pat’s family as she struggles to maintain her dignity and the home they have shared for over thirty years. Angie and Pat have been together for decades and have just hosted a mid-autumn festival dinner for Pat’s biological family, who are less financially secure than Pat. The younger generation speaks fondly of « Auntie Angie. » However, when Pat dies in her sleep, Pat’s family considers Angie to be just « a friend » of lesser standing than the family, overrides her wishes, and gradually pushes her out. Her lawyer friend points out all of Pat’s errors of omission. Refusing to sign a will (Pat is considering starting a new business in fashion retail rather than acknowledge the possibility of death), the execution is left to Pat’s brother. Not leaving written instructions for the funeral means the biological family takes over. Not marrying abroad means Angie has no moral standing, not the slight legal standing such a role might provide. Having the apartment in Pat’s name alone means that Angie has no claim. The best Angie can do is claim a dependency allowance from the estate. As Angie loses battle after battle, it is her chosen family who provide emotional support. This is supposedly based on real-life events and shows the problems of not being prepared. Movies with this theme appeared in North America a decade or two ago, but the problems mostly ended when same-sex marriage became legal. This is a reminder that the fight for rights still needs to continue, but before rights are established, legal issues must be addressed.
